Inspiring Prevention Symposium and Longwood Symphony Concert

Berkshire Children and Families and Longwood Symphony Orchestra invite you to an extraordinary two-day weekend in the Berkshires beginning with a symposium focusing on children and the arts on June 11 at the Berkshire Museum, and ending with LSO's Ozawa Hall debut on June 12 under the baton of Artistic Director and Conductor Jonathan McPhee, featuring the works of Debussy, Nielsen and American composer Gene Scheer.

Longwood Symphony Orchestra has chosen Berkshire Children and Families as its first Berkshire-based Community Partner and salutes them for their outstanding work with some of Berkshire County's most vulnerable populations. Berkshire Children and Families is the most comprehensive family services agency in Western MA, improving the lives of children by helping families build their future through effective, innovative programs including parenting services, early care and education, family literacy, foster care and adoption. Founded in 1887, Berkshire Children and Families is headquartered in Pittsfield, MA.

Berkshire Children and Families and LSO will be joined by an all-star Honorary Event Committee: Governor Deval L. Patrick, Eugene A. Dellea, Mayor James M. Ruberto, Senator Benjamin Downing, State Representative Smitty Pignatelli, Massachusett and Berkshire County Representative Daniel E. Bosley and State Representative Denis E. Guyer.

Symposium - Friday, June 11, 2010, 9:00-4:00

Berkshire Museum, Pittsfield, MA

The new relationship between Berkshire Children and Families and Longwood Symphony Orchestra has sparked the creation of a symposium. Inspiring Prevention was itself inspired by a conversation between leaders of Berkshire Children and Families and LSO. The intersection of the two organizations' respective missions around music and medicine, early education and literacy in the context of parent-child relationships for children brings together the interests of a wide range of specialists in the field of psychology, literacy, pediatrics and child advocacy. Inspiring Prevention will be held at the Berkshire Museum in Pittsfield, and will intertwine notable speakers with musical performances to give emphasis to the rich opportunities for healing and healthy development for children.

Presenters will include:

Eli Newberger, MD: Inspiring Prevention in the Berkshires

String Quartet from Longwood Symphony Chamber Players: Keeping Families in Harmony - Perspectives on the long term effects of childhood trauma:

  • Terry Buchmiller, M.D. Pediatric Surgery, Children’s Hospital Boston
  • Lisa Wong, M.D. Milton Pediatric Associates
  • Andrea Spencer, M.D. Pediatric Psychiatry, Massachusetts General Hospital
  • Tai Katzenstein, Ph.D. Psychology, Massachusetts General Hospital
  • Four pediatric experts from Harvard Medical School and Longwood Symphony Orchestra offer perspectives on the long-term effects of childhood trauma. The arts promote self esteem, focus and discipline; music provides a bridge that heals fractured families.

Jean Ciborowski Fahey, Ph.D., Massachusetts Family Literacy Consortium: The Journey Toward Literacy Begins at Birth

Kerby Alvy, Ph.D., The Center for the Improvement of Child Caring: The Art of Effective Parenting – Learning to be the Parents Our Children Deserve.

Wrap Up Panel discussion will follow with Eli Newberger, Jean Ciborowski Fahey, Lisa Wong, Kerby Alvy, Carolyn Mower Burns, LICSW, and Kelley DeLorenzo, M.Ed.

Special Tubby the Tuba Performance:

Paul Tripp and composer George Kleinsinger composed Tubby the Tuba nearly sixty years ago. This beloved children's work will be performed as part of the symposium by Boston Symphony Orchestra Principal Tuba player Mike Roylance, Drs. Eli and Carolyn Newberger and members of the Longwood Symphony Orchestra. The text will be read by Tripp's very own son, David. The musical fable about individuality, ostracism and ultimate acceptance, will underscore some of the themes of the day.
